Our PhD programme aims to prepare students for rigorous research in various areas in Applied linguistics including language assessment, second language acquisition, discourse analysis, phonetics and phonology, modern English linguistics, morphology and syntax, sociolinguistics and pedagogical grammar. Students will be exposed to ways of doing research based on the chosen area of specialisation with the guidance from the supervisor(s) at the Applied Linguistics Unit.

In pursuing the doctoral studies, students are required to take two courses namely Research Methodology and Academic Writing at the beginning of their enrolment. The former aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop and carry out a research where students are exposed to the research design, strategies, research method and process. The latter course exposes students to the practical and rhetorical strategies for developing effective writing. This course focuses on producing well-formed, accurate and comprehensible research reports that meet the standards and conventions of academic style.

To prepare students for the proposal defence, a colloquium session is available which is organised by the Applied Linguistics Unit, School of Languages, Civilisation and Philosophy (SLCP). The session enables students to present the initial ideas of their research work to others and to receive feedback from the Applied Linguistics lecturers acting as panellists and their peers. The colloquium presentation is compulsory before students are allowed to defend their proposals as required by the graduate school.

Our realm is a multicultural setting. We have local and international doctoral students who come from diverse backgrounds including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Algeria, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine and Yemen. Together, they form a rather close-knit group who are seen assisting each other in their own unique ways in ensuring that the research is done effectively.

Career opportunities

Applied linguistics degree provides students with a wide range of career opportunities including teaching, translation, interpreting, research, consulting, marketing, publishing, journalism, law, medicine, information technology, language and speech expertise, broadcasting, communication, public and international relations.

Students will also be exposed to other languages and cultures of their peers and as a result, develop the necessary cross-cultural and intercultural skills.
