Dr. Mohd Hilmi Hamzah is an Associate Professor at the Applied Linguistics Unit, School of Languages, Civilisation and Philosophy, Universiti Utara Malaysia. His main area of expertise lies in Phonetics and Phonology, particularly in acoustic and auditory phonetics. He is a member of the International Phonetic Association and also the Malaysian Association of Applied Linguistics. To date, he has published 23 articles in Scopus-indexed journals (h-index: 5) including Journal of Phonetics (Q1 SCOPUS/SSCI/AHCI) and Journal of the International Phonetic Association (Q1 SCOPUS/Web of Science). He has presented many papers at top international conferences in phonetics including International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (2011, 2015, 2019), Speech Prosody (2012) and Australasian International Conference on Speech Science and Technology (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016). He has completed two research projects in pronunciation teaching and learning awarded by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM Potential Academic Staff Grant) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research Grant). He is currently leading a national research work on Orang Asli languages titled ‘MyAsli: A phonological model for the integration and preservation of endangered indigenous languages in Malaysia’, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). He has graduated ten post-graduate students (four PhD students and six master’s degree students in Applied Linguistics and Teaching of English as a Second Language). He is now the main supervisor for twelve PhD students in various areas under the Applied Linguistics discipline, including language vitality, phonotactic structure, vowel production, corrective feedback, and language motivation.
