PROGRAMME AIMS

The programme aims to produce educators who are professionally competent and intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially balanced and able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to conduct research in the related fields. The broad educational aim of the graduate programme in Islamic Studies is to build a strong foundation of knowledge and to develop problem-solving; teamwork and communication skills of educators to drive forward the nation and humanity at the large in tandem with the university’s charter and philosophy.

 

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

  1. Graduates are able to utilise analytical, critical and creative thinking skills to evaluate and make decisions based on research evidence and experience
  2. Graduates are able to demonstrate functional work skills that include practical, interpersonal and communications skills, as well as digital and numeracy competencies in designated research areas based on scientific process.
  3. Graduates are able to disseminate the research outcomes through quality publications

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

  1. MASTER PROGRAMME

This programme is offered by full research. Students are required to:

Attend and pass the following courses (if necessary) with at least B grade:

SZRZ 6014 Research Methodology

SCLE 6014 Academic Writing

and/or any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.              

 2         Present and defend the proposed research to a committee                  

 3         Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College           

4          Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and         

 5         Submit a written thesis          

  1. THE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PH.D.) PROGRAMME

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme is offered by full research. However, students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to enroll and pass the following courses during the first two (2) semesters of their enrolment (i.e. before being allowed to defend their thesis proposal):

  1. a) SZRZ6014 Research Methodology
  2. b) SCLE6014 Academic Writing
  3. c) Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.

To complete the Ph.D. programme, students are required to:

Present and defend the proposed research/thesis to a committee;

Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College;

Produce at least two (2) articles, in (Option A or Option B).

Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and

 Submit a final thesis

                  Option A

                 at least one (1) article is accepted for publication in ISI Journal or Scopus; and

                 at least one (1) article is under review for publication in a refereed journal.

                  Option B

                  Two (2) articles are published in a refereed journal

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENT;

  1. MASTER PROGRAMME BY RESEARCH

Applicants for a Master programme must possess

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in any field of Islamic Studies or Arabic Languages with CGPA of 2.75 from University Utara Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognized by the University Senate; or
  2. At least three (3) years experienced relevant to the chosen area of specialization; or

iii. Diploma holder with (10) working experienced in related field and minimum age of thirty-five years; or

  1. Any other equivalent qualifications recognized by the University Senate;

AND

  1. Fulfils the English Language requirements.

Student must score:

  1. 500 in the TOEFL written test, OR
  2. 173 in the computerized TOEFL test, OR
  3. 59 in the TOEFL exam through website, OR
  4. not less 5.5 in the IELTS test, OR
  5. Student must have a bachelor’s degree from any country of the language of instructions is English (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA)
  1. DOCTORAL PROGRAMME

Applicants for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme must possess

  1. A master’s degree in any field of Islamic Studies or Arabic Languages from University Utara Malaysia or any other institution of higher learning recognized by the University Senate; or
  2. Any other equivalent qualifications recognized by the University Senate;

AND

  1. Fulfills the English Language requirements.
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

Research Proposal (for Programme by Research):

    1. Masters - 1,000 to 1,500 words
    2. PhD - 1,500 to 2,000 words
